WHAT DO AMBERGRIS CAYE AND WHALE VOMIT HAVE IN COMMON?

WARNING-Whales May Vomit Here

Supposedly Ambergris Caye got its name from "whale vomit".  Ambergris, a solid, waxy, substance of a dull gray or blackish color produced in the digestive system and secreted by only sperm whales, also know as "whale vomit". It is lighter than water and therefore would float ashore, it was then collected and sold to companies to make perfumes. It is said to have a unique odor that is a smooth, musty scent.   However, most perfumes no longer use ambergris and it has since been replaced with synthetic fixatives.

No worries though, it is very unlikely that you would find any whale vomit on Ambergris Caye today.
