Scorpions in Belize

If you are scared of Scorpions, Belize may not be the place for you.  Scorpions are found in 16 states of the US and are found through out all of Belize with 4 known species.  Scorpions actually do not bite, but they sting and are usually not life threatening.  The stinger is in the tail and the sting can be very painful. 

Scorpions are nocturnal and come out when the sun sets.  They love to find little corners or hidden away places to hide. 


We found one on the shower floor one morning when we were staying at the Maruba Jungle Spa in Belize.

MARUBA RESORT JUNGLE SPA- BELIZE IN JULY 1998

For over 30 years I have been watching the daytime soap operas “All My Children” and “One Life to Live”.  Dorian Lord plays the primary villainess on “One Life to Live”.  While watching one day, Dorian had just gotten back from Belize.  She had also brought back her masseuse from Belize.  I thought to myself, where is Belize?  I need to go there because I love massages.  I found out it was in Central America.  Yes, most people would think that would be a long way to go for just a massage, but I now wanted to go to Belize.  So I told Bill we were going…I booked two tickets that summer and off we went to explore what was in Belize. 

Our first few days in Belize, we stayed at the Maruba Resort Spa in the jungles of Belize.  I was about to get my massage.  The room had racked sand floors and beautiful tapestries hung blowing in the winds and music played in the background.  Colorful bottles of natural oils sat on the mahogany cabinets.   I thought to myself, this was paradise.

Then in walked Hosea, he spoke no English.  He had this really large growth of some type on his neck.  I am thinking..I came all this way for this, but Hosea had magic hands.   It was the most unbelievable massage that I had ever had.  I have had many massages in my lifetime and he rates number one. 

Oh, did I mention the scorpion on the floor of our shower in our room.  Oh well, it was just a small one.

 

First Visit to Belize July 1998

Our first trip to Belize was in July of 1998. This was a vacation trip. We did all the tourist things that you do. We flew into Belize City and from there we traveled to Maruba Resort Jungle Spa. Maruba Resort is a spa in the jungles of Belize. If you ever get the opportunity, you should definitely spend a few days there. It was unbelievable. I am not sure if Hosea is still there, but he would come highly recommended. I have had lots of massages…but he rates #1 in my book.

We left the Maruba Resort and headed to Ambergis Caye. The largest of the Caye's in Belize. We took a small plane at Tropic Air. I remember landing on a dirt airstrip and it looked at little scary. But we landed with no problems. We then spent a few days at a resort in Ambergris Caye. We snorkeled with Sharks and Stingrays. This was the beginning of falling in LOVE with Belize.
