Plan Your Roadtrip Through Belize

According to our reliably fallible sense of direction and a rumpled map that’s let us down more than any map should, we’re passing through the village of San Pedro Columbia, in the hilly southwest corner of Belize. We’re well off our planned route, trundling along a dirt road with no name on an impromptu mission to find the ancient Maya city of Lubaantun, established in the 8th century and home to 20,000 people in its prime. We’re close, we hope. Lubaantun (a word that means “place of fallen stones”) was the spot where, in the 1920s, a 17-year-old English girl, working with her adventurer/archaeologist father, reportedly stumbled upon the Skull of Doom, a 4,000-year-old crystal cranium that’s believed to have given its holder the power to kill people with his mind. As side trips go, that beats the world’s biggest ball of twine any day.

Some 700 people occupy San Pedro Columbia these days; it’s the country’s largest enclave of an indigenous Maya tribe known as the Kekchi. They smile and wave to us, a driver with a farmer’s tan and Birkenstocks and a passenger with a blond mop top and three cameras around his neck. Broad foreheads and strong noses call to mind the faces staring back from ancient paintings and sculptures discovered at dozens of sites like Lubaantun, and it’s not hard to imagine these villagers’ ancestors greeting the first Spanish conquistadors with similar warmth and curiosity.

Photo of the Week - Signs, Signs, Everywhere There's Signs

When you are in San Pedro, Belize and need to find a place, just look for a "Sign".  Looking for the airport? Hop on a flight at Tropic Air.  Looking for a place to stay for a week?  You have got Pedro's Inn.  Need to cool off?  Try some Ice Cream from DanE's Frozen Custard for a treat.  Want to adopt a pet?  Go see Saga Humane Society on Ambergris Caye, Belize.

Jaguar claws are wicked works of art. The brawny cats use these blade-sharp toenails to climb the trunks of tropical trees, where they wait to ambush tapirs, deer and peccaries. On the pounce, a jaguar’s fangs — driven by the cat world’s most powerful jaws — go to work, piercing the prey’s skull for a single-bite kill. But it’s the claw at hand that has me enthralled. I run my finger down the smooth, hooked front and test the point, sensing that the slightest pressure would have it tearing through my skin. I’m lost for a moment, comparing my woefully useless human nail to this terrible, terribly functional tool. Then a sudden primordial chill tingles deep inside me. I lift my eyes and meet an intense golden stare — I’d almost forgotten that the claw I’m fondling remains attached to a live jaguar.

Fortunately, the jaguar in question is Junior Buddy, and he’s a real pussycat. Junior’s beefy paw hangs high-fived against the wire fence of his management area while a zookeeper hand-feeds him chicken feet. Born here at the Belize Zoo three years ago, Junior serves not only as a star attraction and an ambassador for his species but also as a purring, prowling example of the zoo’s success at saving these awesome animals.

"Ice Blast" in Mississippi

Sunday unlike in Belize where it was sunny and temperatures were in the 80's, Mississippi  along with most of the southeastern United States received an "ice blast".  It made for a great day to stay inside, watch tv and eat.  Schools are closed today and offices are not opening until noon today.

I went outside and took a few pictures to post this morning.
